A political spat is brewing in Trans Nzoia County between Governor George Natembeya and Senator Allan Chesang, sparked by a flurry of online exchanges.
The latest jab came from Senator Chesang, who accused the governor of having “misplaced priorities” after Natembeya opposed the leasing of Nzoia Sugar Company to private investors.
“Before leading protests in Bungoma, Governor Natembeya should first fix the health crisis in Trans Nzoia. Our people deserve functioning hospitals, not political drama,’’ wrote Chesang on X.
He further questioned the governor’s motives, pointing out what he termed hypocrisy in the handling of Rai Group’s involvement in the sugar industry.
‘’Why is Governor Natembeya protesting Rai’s involvement in leasing Nzoia Sugar, yet he’s silent when the same group buys sugarcane from Trans Nzoia farmers? Is it really about defending the people, or is it just about political showmanship?’’ he posed.
Chesang’s comments follow Natembeya’s announcement of plans to protest the government's move to privatise key sugar firms in the region.
“I view the privatisation or leasing of this institution as a threat to the region’s economy, especially considering its central role in supporting sugarcane farmers and surrounding communities,” the governor said.
Senator Chesang argued that instead of fixating on the leasing process, the county boss should focus on ensuring farmers benefit from the factories once operational.
The public has been divided over the political standoff. While some have praised Natembeya’s stance as patriotic, others have criticised the senator for what they termed political opportunism.
“This is the sacrifice of liberation. These are acts of patriotism,” said X user, Divinson Obare.
But Sitati Wasilwa countered: “As a Senator, you ought to be pushing the national government to avail funds to counties. Counties are financially strained. But of course you intend to score cheap political points.’’
