Kenya confirms 314 Mpox cases across 22 counties

Kenya has recorded 314  Mpox cases since the outbreak began in July 2024, according to a statement from the Ministry of Health.

Cases have been reported across 22 counties, with Mombasa leading at 146, followed by Busia (63), Nakuru (21), Kilifi (19), and Nairobi (17), among others.

“In the last 24 hours, four additional Mpox cases have been confirmed. Three in Mombasa County and one in Nairobi County,” the ministry said.

Currently, at least thirty-three (33) patients are admitted to various health facilities, while 54 are under home-based isolation and care. A total of 222 patients have recovered, while five have died since the onset of the outbreak.

The Health Ministry reported that 422 contacts of positive cases have been identified. Of these, 392 have completed the recommended 21-day monitoring period, while the remainder are still under observation.

Additionally, more than 4.7 million travelers have been screened at airports and other entry points, with suspected cases referred for further investigation.

The ministry noted improved disease surveillance, attributing it to collaboration with county governments and partners. It has deployed multidisciplinary Rapid Response Teams (RRTs) to support healthcare workers, conduct active case searches, trace contacts, and manage confirmed cases.

Support includes mental health and psychosocial services for those affected.

The ministry has urged the public to observe preventive measures, including avoiding close contact with suspected or confirmed Mpox cases, and avoiding sharing personal items, clothing, or bedding with infected individuals.

The public has also been urged to practice safe sex, report symptoms early, and seek immediate medical attention.
