Meru brothers' termites dispute ends in tragedy

A tragic domestic dispute in Meru County escalated into violence, resulting in a fatal machete attack between two brothers.

The quarrel, which began over termites, ended with one brother dead and the other severely injured.

The incident took place in Igoji, where 48-year-old Godfrey Ngugi allegedly attacked his elder brother, Japhet Kimathi, 57, with a machete. Kimathi fought back, fatally injuring Ngugi with the same weapon.

The dispute reportedly began when Ngugi confronted Kimathi’s nine-year-old son, who was harvesting termites from a manhole.

Ngugi collapsed and died a few metres from the scene, while two bloodstained machetes were recovered by the authorities.

The boy has been taken into custody after reports indicate that he also participated in the altercation, and Kimathi remains in hospital with injuries.

In a separate incident, a police operation in Kayole, Nairobi, led to the arrest of a suspected police impostor. Officers from Njiru and Kayole carried out a joint undercover operation, resulting in the capture of 30-year-old Daniel Mori Mohere, who was posing as a police officer.

Two accomplices, 59-year-old Julius Marwa Chacha and 27-year-old Caroline Mwenzi Nzomo, were also arrested.

Several government-issued uniforms and other official police gear believed to have been used in impersonation were recovered and documented as exhibits.

Investigations into the two incidents are ongoing.
