Man killed, officer injured in forest clash with KFS rangers

An 18-year-old man has been shot dead and a Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officer injured during a confrontation in Kibiri Forest, Vihiga County.

According to police, KFS rangers had responded to reports of charcoal production on June 2 when they were confronted by five individuals. 

A scuffle ensued, leaving one ranger with deep head injuries.

During the confrontation, rangers opened fire, fatally shooting one of the suspects, identified as Brian Machanga as his colleagues allegedly fled.

This comes as security officers intensify a crackdown on illegal charcoal burning.

Police noted an increase in deforestation cases in the area, prompting stepped-up enforcement against charcoal burning, which is prohibited within forest reserves.

Efforts to get a comment from Western Regional Forest Conservator offices were futile.

Residents urged the KFS management to establish a good relationship with the locals and order its officers from using excessive force against the offenders or encroach. 

“We want to urge the KFS leadership to develop a good relationship with locals because taking away lives of people will not address the situation of protecting and conserving our forest and environment,” said David Akidiva.
