Kenya to stage first drone light show as cities turn to tech for public displays

Kenya will hold its first-ever public drone light show in Nairobi on Wednesday, May 28, marking a shift in how cities use technology in public events and urban storytelling.

The night-time aerial display will take place during the launch of a newly completed green-certified tower along Mombasa Road, where hundreds of unmanned aerial vehicles fitted with lights will create moving formations in the sky.

Organisers said the drones will perform a synchronised routine, replacing fireworks with a quieter, programmable alternative.

“This will be a show like no other. It will be the kind of aerial spectacle seen in cities like Dubai and Shanghai,” said Purple Dot International, the developer behind the tower.

The event reflects a growing interest in using drones as visual tools during civic moments, public ceremonies and cultural showcases.

 Drone displays have been used internationally to tell stories, promote environmental awareness and provide lower-emission alternatives to fireworks.

Project Lead Bharat Kerai said the organisers wanted the launch to reflect both innovation and responsibility.

“We want to make a lasting impression during the launch of the Purple Tower that is why we are deploying the drone show,” said Kerai.

Experts have noted the rise of drone shows in urban spaces due to their flexibility and ability to convey messages without the noise and pollution associated with traditional celebrations.

However, Kenya has yet to establish consistent public guidelines on the use of drones for mass events.

The 14-storey building where the show will take place has been described by its developers as meeting international benchmarks on water and energy use.
