Man charged with stealing property worth Sh6.9 million from employer

Police in Mombasa have arrested an employee of a company in Changamwe on suspicion he stole the company’s property worth Sh6.9 million.

Shakil Ali Mohamed was arrested following an investigation into the theft which took place between February last year and February this year.

He was arraigned in court before Mombasa Senior Resident Magistrate Gladys Ollimo who ordered him to appear for plea tomorrow.

This was after his lawyer Ouma Otieno successfully applied for deferment of the plea after Mohamed was deposed.

According to police investigation, Mohamed was suspected to have stolen the company’s property worth Sh6.9 million in a period of six months without being detected.

In her ruling, the magistrate allowed Mohamed time after his lawyer applied to have his plea deferred to another day because he had contracted dengue fever.

“I wish to place a record for the accused person. The accused is unwell. He has suffered from dengue fever. His child also has suffered dengue fever,” said Otieno.

Otieno successfully applied for the plea to be deferred  immediately after his file was placed before the magistrate. The prosecution was led by state lawyer Brenda Ogada.

The charges state that on diverse dates between March 2024 and February 2025, at Changamwe sub-county in Mombasa county, he stole Sh6,952,610 which came to his possession by being an employee of Gateway Marine Services.

The prosecution has lined up five witnesses.
