Police in Nairobi have arrested four members of a well-organised and armed gang suspected of carrying out robbery with violence within the capital, and other parts of the country.
The intelligence-led operation led to the recovery of an AK-47 rifle with a fully loaded magazine and two pistols, in addition to several rounds of ammunition.
Officers attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) identified three Ugandand and a Kenyan national as part of the syndicate.
A forensic analysis, followed by a profiling of each suspect, tied them to various scenes of crimes that are under investigation prompting a multi-agency team to pursue them.
Upon arrest the four suspects led detectives to their hideouts, mostly rented houses, in Saika, Dandora, Huruma, and Pumwani within Nairobi. The gang leader was arrested in the Pumwani area with a pistol tucked in his waist, while another suspect was in possession of another pistol, with 11 rounds of ammunition.
While confirming the raids, Nairobi Regional Police Commander George Sedah said investigations are ongoing to determine if the weapons were used in previous crimes.
“We are analysing the firearms for fingerprints and ballistic data,” he said, adding that the presence of foreign suspects points to cross-border criminal networks.
Sedah also urged the public to cooperate with the police by reporting suspicious activity, calling on those in possession of illegal firearms to surrender them. “We call upon the public to keep working with us. Your information is very valuable,”he stated.
According to the police, the group is likely behind a series of robbery incidents reported in Eastleigh and Kamukunji.
A motorbike the crew uses to get to their targets is part of the exhibits detectives plan to use in their case against the four men.
