Migori County Assembly has passed a Sh12.15 billion supplementary budget with more focus placed on health and clearing of pending bills.

The health department got the lion's share after scooping Sh2.8 billion in the supplementary budget 2024/2025 that was endorsed by MCAs.

In the supplementary budget estimates, Migori County has proposed to fund its budget to the tune of Sh12.15 billion to meet its recurrent and development budget programs.

Migori residents expressed their delight in the huge chunks allocated to the health sector as they anticipate improved health services.

“The move is good, and we now hope that health services will be improved within the county. We expect to find medicine and receive other essential services when we visit the health facilities,” said David Oketch, a resident in Migori town.

This comes at a time when the health sector continues to face challenges of a lack of drugs, water, and other essential services, among others.

The chairman of the budget and appropriation committee in the county assembly, Graham Kagali, said the budget they passed addressed teething problems that included health and pending bills.

According to Mr Kagali, the health department has experienced so many challenges.

He pointed out that initial pending bills of Sh1.7 billion had been paid by the county government, and only Sh300 million was remaining.

The chair budget committee believed that Governor Ochilo Ayacko's administration would act swiftly and clear the remaining pending bills.

Kakrao ward MCA Tobius Okelo, who is chair of the Assembly's health committee, said promotion of health workers was considered in the budget.

"The supplementary budget will go a long way in ensuring that issues faced in the health department are addressed," said Mr Okelo.

In the supplementary budget, the county assembly, Finance and Economic Planning received a similar amount received allocation of Sh1 billion.

The Environment department received Sh1.09 billion while the Roads and Transport department got Sh1.09 billion.

Public service was allocated Sh931.8 million, Trade Sh513.8 million, County executive Sh585.3 million, Education Sh658.1 million, Agriculture Sh958.7 million, and Water and energy Sh686.9 million.

The Lands and Physical Planning and the office of the county attorney were the biggest losers in the budget as they got Sh213.5 million and Sh111.8 million respectively.
