Authorities are competing against time to complete several multi-million infrastructure projects ahead of this year's Madaraka Day Celebrations to be held in the county.

Among the major upgrades is the expansion of Raila Odinga Stadium, which will now accommodate more than 10,000 people.

Prior to its rehabilitation, the stadium had only one pavilion, which could accommodate about 5,000 people.

The upgrading of the stadium is expected to end by mid-next month.

Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo said the Stadium will be completed and handed over to the government by May 15, 2025.

Dr Omollo, who was accompanied by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, led the National Celebrations steering committee where in a supervision where he confirmed that the stadium can now accommodate at least 10,000 people.

The PS urged traders to take advantage of the event to reap big profits.

"This is going to be a golden opportunity for economic growth. Let us be ready to tap business opportunities that will result from the celebration," said Dr Omollo.

Governor Gladys Wanga said the Madaraka Day celebration will create a platform for addressing issues affecting fishermen in Lake Victoria.

Such issues include the insecurity of fishermen in the lake.

She expressed concerns that the reduced catch in the lake had led fishermen to fight, leading to deaths and injuries in the lake.

“Fishermen are affected by various problems in Lake Victoria. The whole country is going to be here, and modalities of addressing such problems will be discussed,” said Wanga.

The Governor underscored the significance of saving Lake Victoria.

“Even the ongoing project on the stadium upgrading and roads being constructed in our county will have long-term economic benefits for residents,” said Wanga.
