Man alleges police assault, seeks justice over broken arm

A 31-year-old man from the Tulwap Kipsigis area in Kipkelion East is demanding justice after he was allegedly assaulted by police officers, leaving him with a broken left arm.
Speaking from his hospital bed at Medistar Hospital in Kericho town, Cyrus Chirchir claimed he was assaulted by four police officers attached to Kahorora Police Station following an incident at an M-Pesa shop on January 20, 2026 at around 6:30pm.
Chirchir, a boda boda rider, said the incident began when he accidentally bumped into one of the officers inside the shop while attempting to deposit Sh5,000.
He alleged that the officer tried to slap him, but he dodged the blow, causing the officer to fall.
“When he tried to slap me, I dodged and he fell down. Three other officers who were outside rushed in and started beating me, accusing me of trying to assault one of them,” said Chirchir.

He further alleged that the officers handcuffed him and escorted him to Kahorora Police Station, where the assault continued.
“While at the station, one of the officers, who appeared drunk, picked a wooden stick and started beating me repeatedly. My arm was broken as I tried to shield my face from the blows,” he said.
According to Chirchir, after the officers noticed he had sustained serious injuries, they decided to take him to Londiani Police Station.
However, officers at Londiani allegedly declined to book him after observing his injuries and instead advised that he be taken to Londiani Hospital.
“After an X-ray was done and the hospital confirmed I had a serious injury and needed referral, the two officers who had taken me there left me and rode away on their motorcycles,” Chirchir claimed.
He said he later filed a complaint against the Kahorora Police Station officers at Londiani Police Station under OB number 14/22/01.
Kericho County Police Commander James Ngetich confirmed that investigations into the incident have commenced.
“I want the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate this matter and take action against the officers who assaulted me and left me with a broken arm,” said Chirchir.
He added that he has so far spent more than Sh40,000 on medical bills and that his boda boda business has been disrupted due to the injuries.
