Police in Ongata Rongai are investigating a bizarre incident in which a four-year-old boy was allegedly killed by minors.

The two boys reportedly tied Rachvill Anyika's hands and legs was before throwing him into the Ole Kasasi River on Monday afternoon.

According to the boy’s mother, Vivian Agiza, her son had gone out to play with the rest of the children at around 1pm.

“He ate lunch and stepped out to play. Initially, I knew he had gone to his school where they usually go to play. But I got suspicious after he took longer to return. Usually, he comes back to drink water then goes out to play with his friends,” she narrated, struggling to hold back tears.

She later learned the the son and a neighbour’s children had wandered towards the nearby river, more than a kilometre away.

At around 3pm, a neighbour’s child came running, shouting that a child had drowned in the river.

“He came saying, You people are here watching and there is a child who has been killed in the river’, but it didn’t hit me immediately that it could be my child. I actually dismissed his statement as his usual jokes,” she recounted.

But the 22-year-old mother got alarmed and went out looking for her son. “Instincts told me to follow other people to the river to ascertain what that boy was claiming.”

When she arrived at the scene, she was met by a heartbreaking sight. His son’s undressed body was lying on the rock, water oozing from his mouth and nose.

“My child was innocent. He was a good, playful boy. He didn’t deserve to die,” said a tearful Agiza.

It emerged that the boy was in company of three children aged 12, 10 and four.

According to the father, Cosmas Muasya, witnesses reported that the 12-year-old boy tied his son’s hands and instructed the 10-year-old to help him tie the legs. They them tied a stuffed bag on him before throwing the helpless child into the river.

The older boy allegedly claimed he was punishing him for calling him a monkey.

However, it is suspected that the child may have been sexually assaulted before being killed as he was naked.

“We hear that the boys tried to rescue him but they couldn’t. The eldest one told the other two to stay mute about the incident and fled the scene,” Muasya said.

“It was a passerby who saw his body floating and rushed to rescue him. He untied his hands and legs, tried to offer first aid, but he had already died.”

The father claimed the minors confessed to killing.

Police have arrested the two minors.

“I'm so saddened. He was my firstborn and he had already enrolled in school. He was to join Pre-Primary 1 (PP1) next year January,” said the father of two.

The body was removed to Saitoti Mortuary in Ongata Rongai awaiting postmortem.

“All we want is justice for our son because one of the boys has a history of assaulting other children in this community but no action has been taken,” Muasya said.
