Rainfall to persist across various regions, weatherman warns

Rainfall is expected to persist in various parts of the country over the coming week.

According to the latest seven-day forecast by the Kenya Meteorological Department, rain will be experienced across the Central Highlands, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, Coast, and Western Kenya, though with varied intensity and distribution.

The coastal strip, particularly Lamu and Garsen, is expected to receive between 10mm and 20mm of rain, while Kilifi, along the Indian Ocean, and inland areas such as Tsavo, Bura, and Kwale will record lighter showers ranging from 1mm to 10mm.

"The Rift Valley region, especially counties including Trans Nzoia, Bungoma, Uasin Gishu, Bomet, Kericho, and Nakuru is forecast to receive rainfall ranging from 10mm to 20mm," the department said in a statement.

In contrast, more intense downpours of between 20mm and 50mm are anticipated in the Lake Victoria Basin and parts of Western Kenya, covering counties such as Busia, Migori, Nyamira, Kisii, Homa Bay, Siaya, Kisumu, and Vihiga.

The Central Highlands are also likely to receive significant rainfall, with counties like Kiambu, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Tharaka Nithi, Meru, and Laikipia expecting widespread showers.

Notably, several areas of Nyandarua, Murang’a, and Tharaka Nithi could see rainfall levels rising up to 120mm.

Similar high rainfall amounts of up to 120mm are projected in parts of Kakamega, Busia, and the border areas between Nandi and Kericho.

"However, counties such as Narok, Baringo, and Elgeyo Marakwet are likely to remain largely dry throughout the forecast period," the statement added.

Elsewhere, Mandera, Nairobi, and Kajiado counties are expected to receive light showers of up to 10mm.
