One person has lost his life while six others escaped unhurt in a gold mine accident at Lumba village in Central Asembo location, Rarieda Sub-County.

Michael Obunga lost his life after the mine hole they were working in collapsed.

It is reported that the deceased, a 23-year-old man, went to mine gold alongside his six friends before the incident happened.

According to North Ramba sub-location assistant chief Maurice Omondi, the deceased, unlike his friends, got into a corner of the hole where a large stone fell on him and killed him instantly.

"On getting the report, we rushed to the scene and with the help of the members of the public, we managed to rescue the other six victims before retrieving Odhiambo's lifeless body," said the assistant chief.

The administrator encouraged caution when miners get into such open holes.

The body was taken to Lwak Mission hospital mortuary for a post-mortem exercise as investigations begin into the matter.

A similar incident happened in the same village in March after five women lost their lives when a mine hole collapsed with them.
